An update to my previous post about a proposal in New Jersey to require criminal background checks on all persons handling vital stastics records: The bill, A465, passed the General Assembly today. Its Senate companion bill, S649, has yet to be heard by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

Did this bill pass the senate Jodee? It sounds like a bill passed in haste.

The Senate companion bill, S649, has not been yet been considered by the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, a necessary step before it goes to the full Senate for a vote. I would not say the Assembly version was passed in haste, it was first introduced in 2005. But it did slip under the radar of the Municipal Clerks and Registrars. With thousands of bills introduced each session and only a fraction making their way through the process, it is easy for some things to go unnoticed.
